Accessing The Free Library of Philadelphia: It All Starts With a Library Card

The mission of The Free Library of Philadelphia is to “advance literacy, guide learning, and inspire curiosity.” The mission of The Free Library of Philadelphia Foundation is to provide resources and advocacy to advance the Library’s mission while stewarding and promoting our special collections for the benefit of all Philadelphians and beyond. Together, our vision is to build an enlightened community devoted to lifelong learning. And it all starts with a Free Library card!

How to Get a Free Library Card

A Free Library card is available at no cost to anyone who lives, works, pays taxes, or goes to school in the City of Philadelphia. Anyone who lives in the state of Pennsylvania can also obtain a Free Library card without charge. Simply apply in-person or by mail! Philadelphia Family notes that “adults applying in person should either bring a valid Pennsylvania State ID or two forms of ID that have the same name and address. The full list of valid forms of ID, as well as what kids under 17 should bring, is available here.” Please note that you will be asked for identification the first time you borrow physical materials with your new card.

The Perks of a Free Library Card

Beyond helpful digital resources and a vast catalog of books for every age and interest, a Free Library card provides access to unique and enriching events, as well as vital programs and services at Free Library locations across the City of Philadelphia. The Free Library of Philadelphia Foundation funds many of the Library’s programs and services that make a difference throughout our region, including exciting Author Events, early literacy and after-school programs, the Business Resource and Innovation Center (BRIC), Languages and Learning support for adult learners, The Culinary Literacy Center (CLC), public exhibitions of historic and cultural treasures, and so much more!

The Free Library is one of the most important educational and cultural institutions in Philadelphia. While the City of Philadelphia provides public funds for the operations of the Free Library, it is through the Free Library of Philadelphia Foundation and the generosity of private funding from individuals, foundations, and corporations that the Free Library is able to offer many of the Library’s incredible programs and activities that advance literacy, guide learning, inspire curiosity throughout the region, and help deliver on the promise of an equitable future for all of Philadelphia’s children, families, and communities.
