The Free Library Foundation’s Field Family Teen Author Series is a free program that connects Philadelphia students with acclaimed and contemporary authors
PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Free Library of Philadelphia Foundation’s Field Family Teen Author Series today welcomed Dr. Ala Stanford, founder of the Black Doctors Consortium and national leader in health equity, to meet with Philadelphia School District students to discuss her new book, Take Care of Them Like My Own.
In a thoughtful conversation, Dr. Stanford shared her journey from pediatric surgeon to public health trailblazer, reflecting on how community, perseverance, and purpose have guided her work. Students received free copies of her book and participated in a Q&A exploring equity, leadership, and the power of care.
“Meeting Dr. Stanford gives young people a chance to see what resilience and purpose look like in action,” said Monique Moore Pryor, president of the Free Library of Philadelphia Foundation. “The Field Family Teen Author Series is about more than books; it’s about connection. When students hear directly from authors who reflect their communities and experiences, books and the act of reading become personal, relevant, and transformative.”
Next up in the series, on November 5, acclaimed poet and author Clint Smith joins the program to discuss How the Word Is Passed, which has been adapted for young readers, a compelling exploration of the legacy of slavery and the importance of historical understanding.
Made possible through a generous endowment from the family of Marie and Joseph Field, the Teen Author Series connects Philadelphia students in grades 7–12 with celebrated, contemporary authors. Participation is coordinated with schools citywide, and every registered student receives a free copy of the featured book.
