This Author Series event will focus on Dr. Beliso-De Jesús’ important new book, Excited Delirium: Race, Police Violence and the Invention of a Disease. In the book, Dr. Beliso-De Jesús exposes the truth behind the fabricated medical diagnosis known as ‘excited delirium’ and its alarming connection to systemic racism and police violence. A groundbreaking work, Excited Delirium tackles the pervasive myth of ‘excited delirium syndrome,’ which has been used to justify instances of police violence against Black and Brown individuals. Through her extensive research, Dr. Beliso-De Jesús unravels the historical and cultural contexts and biases that allowed this dangerous ‘diagnosis’ to flourish.
During the conversation with Dr. Glaude Jr., Dr. Beliso-De Jesús will delve into the critical issues surrounding the intersection of race, medical myth, and law enforcement, in what promises to be a significant gathering for those who are passionate about justice, police reform, and addressing systemic racism in society.
