Supporting and Uplifting Communities

Supporting and Uplifting Communities with the Free Library of Philadelphia Foundation

In a recent Philadelphia Inquirer article that went “behind the scenes of the Free Library’s Author Events,” including its history and 2024 rebirth, Free Library of Philadelphia Foundation President Monique Moore Pryor stated that “Author Events is among our most important vehicles to reach the community.” Established in 1994, this incredible FLPF program has “raised millions of dollars for capital improvements and literacy programs,” as noted by the publication. And it isn’t the only way we are supporting and uplifting communities.

Through the generosity of individuals and organizations, via membership opportunities and charitable giving, the Free Library of Philadelphia Foundation funds many of The Free Library’s vital programs that make a difference throughout our region, including:

Other programs and resources supported by the FLPF include:

These programs and resources positively impact local residents of all ages across the city, providing literacy enrichment, and opportunities for growth, education, and community engagement.

Preserving History and Building an Enlightened Community

Another key aspect of the Foundation’s mission is to “steward and promote special collections for the benefit of all Philadelphians and beyond.” The Free Library is distinguished among public libraries for the breadth and significance of these special collections, as well as the Library’s commitment to equitable access. By curating and making historic materials available and accessible to the public, the Library and Foundation are collectively helping to preserve our past for current and future generations while promoting a greater understanding of history and culture.

Staying Connected in the New Year

In 2024, the Free Library of Philadelphia Foundation launched an amazing stand-alone website to not only better support our mission but also to better support—and connect with—the community at large. Visit freelibraryfoundation.org today and explore all it has to offer! We also invite you to follow us on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter/X, and LinkedIn, along with our fun and informative Blog, to stay up-to-date on programs, upcoming events, and the latest Foundation news!

This year, our theme is Supporting and Uplifting Communities, with quarterly pillars focusing on Empowerment, Advocacy, Growth, and Arts & Culture! In addition to in-depth information on FLPF programs that reinforce this annual theme, some of the topics we will be covering include unity and cultural connections, access to opportunities and resources, education and skill building, championing diversity, community growth and advocacy, our pushback against censorship and banned books, impact stories, and the important role public library’s serve in communities.

The Free Library is one of the most important educational and cultural institutions in Philadelphia. While the City of Philadelphia provides public funds for the operations of the Free Library, it is through The Free Library of Philadelphia Foundation and the generosity of private funding from individuals, foundations, and corporations that the Free Library is able to offer many of the Library’s incredible programs and activities that advance literacy, guide learning, inspire curiosity throughout the region, and help deliver on the promise of an equitable future for all of Philadelphia’s children, families, and communities.
